The Ancient Roots of Thai Massage: More Than Just a Massage
Explore the rich history and philosophy behind this ancient healing art, which combines acupressure, yoga, and mindfulness.

Thai massage, or 'Nuad Boran', is a therapeutic practice with a history stretching back over 2,500 years. Its origins are not in Thailand, but in India, with its founder being Jivaka Kumar Bhaccha, the personal physician to the Buddha.
Unlike Western massage styles, Thai massage is performed on a mat on the floor, and the client remains fully clothed. It doesn't use oils and is more energizing and rigorous than classic massage.
The Four Divine States of Mind
A true Thai massage practitioner works with the four divine states of mind from Buddhist teachings, known as 'Metta, Karuna, Mudita, Upekkha'.
- Metta: Loving-kindness
- Karuna: Compassion
- Mudita: Sympathetic joy
- Upekkha: Equanimity
This philosophy transforms the massage from a purely physical act into a meditative and healing experience for both the giver and receiver.
